Multiple melt source origin of the Line Islands (Pacific Ocean)

Abstract The Line Islands volcanic chain in the central Pacific Ocean exhibits many characteristics of a hotspot-generated seamount chain; however, lack predictable age progression has stymied previous models for origin this feature. We combined plate-tectonic reconstructions with dates and available geochemistry to develop new model that involves multiple melt regions delivery styles explain spatial temporal history system. Our identifies source region (Larson at ~17°S, ~125°W) contributed formation Islands, as well Mid-Pacific Mountains possibly Pukapuka Ridge.
